Prologue

Sorel stared at the sea, where the waters kissed the end of the horizon for a fleeting moment. Her emotions clouded her vision; she had never understood the connection she shared with the sea before, but now she knew the reason. Sorel knew the truth of her past had been well hidden from her. She breathed in the salty air caressing her skin and wished she could go back. She blinked away the pain. She still did not cry, for she had never shed a tear before.

Was running away from home the path she had to follow?

Sorel was scared and confused; after all, she was only a teenager. Leaving everyone behind felt like the best option. What else could she do? She had no other choice. She could still hear the house questioning her decision; where was she going and why was she leaving them in the middle of the night like some thief?

She should stay and fight.

Only cowards ran.

How could she fight something she only recently discovered?

Sorel wasn’t prepared. She might never be. What about the cost of this fight? She would never forgive herself if something happened to her family because of her. She would never forgive herself if her brother was in danger. Her life meant nothing without them.

She had decided. Now, she had to run as far as she could. She had to swim as fast as she could, as there was no time to waste. Now was the moment to be brave—and, as strange as it may sound—now was the moment to flee.

She looked back to give one last goodbye to the house she grew up in—the house held her most cherished memories—without hesitation, she climbed down the rocks of the cliff. She knew this place like the back of her hand. The darkness didn’t interfere with her mission as the moonlight guided her path. Sorel’s agile movements led her to the rocks formed into a natural balcony seated on the sea in no time. As she watched the moon reflect on the surface from her favorite spot, a wry smile formed on her lips. Her eyes tricked her, changing the shape of the moon into memories of her life in the land.

Sorel had to leave everyone she loved behind.

So many emotions ravaged her soul, but she pushed them away. She had to stay calm. This was the most difficult moment of her young life and her mind had to be clear. Everything was at stake.

She drew in a deep breath and closed her eyes as a breeze whirled around her body. Sorel stretched out her arms before diving into the water. Nothing else mattered as every molecule in her body synchronized with the being she was coming to know as the sea, so refreshing and familiar. She felt as brave as she would ever be. She began to vigorously inhale the oxygen of the sea, appreciating how magical it was to breathe underwater, and how much she had missed it. The sea was her friend; more than her friend, the sea was part of her. Sorel’s time was now short, and she couldn’t waste it.

Sorel had not devised a perfect plan, but she knew exactly what she needed to do. A soft whirl of her thoughts ignited the magic flowing through her, awakening a soft flash of lightning as her scales emerged one by one, gleaming like diamonds beneath the moonlit surface of the water. Sorel grinned at the sight of such beauty.

If only she had time to enjoy a swim with it…

“I know,” Starlight said, his familiar angelic voice echoing around her in the sea. He too, was thrilled by the intense feelings. “We have to go. Now!” Starlight’s voice trembled with fear. He could sense the dark energy trying to find them with eagerness. He knew they were already coming.

Sorel’s tail flickered at the imminent danger fast approaching.

Now it was time to go.

The Shadows were out to get her, and they would stop at nothing.
